Dave Spence, president and CEO of Alpha Packaging, an Overland-based maker of plastic bottles for pharmaceuticals, plans to run for Missouri governor as a Republican candidate.

Spence, a first-time candidate for public office, told the AP he will put some of his own money into the campaign but declined to provide a specific dollar amount.

Does Dave Spence remind you of Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Gov. John Kasick of Ohio? Spence will declare war on teachers, firefighters, police, nurses, company employees, you name it. He will strip off the rights of public and private employees. Is this the man we want to be our next governor?

Dave Spence will go after workers' rights and he will destroy the middle class if elected Missouri Governor. On October 24, 2011 (click the link): St. Louis packaging executive Dave Spence told POLITICO Monday he will run for Missouri governor in 2012 if Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder passes on a campaign. Dave Spence said: If Kinder's out, I'm in, courtesy of Politico. “I know Peter Kinder, I consider him to be a friend. But if there's an opportunity, I'd like to be part of the solution," he said in an interview. "If he decides not to run, I'd do it with two feet." Mr. Spence also wrote Peter Kinder a campaign check of $5,000 the same day.

November 4, 2011 (click the link):  "Businessman Dave Spence, who first told POLITICO late last month about his interest in the Missouri governor's race, is now opening the door to a primary challenge to Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder". Spence hints that he will challenge Kinder his college fraternity brother and close friend 11 days after he had said otherwise and gave Kinder a campaign contribution of $5,000. This is tantamount to Spence throwing his dear friend under the bus during his time of greatest need! Kinder's image had been severely tarnished by a widely publicized stripper scandal (click the link). Tycoon Spence betrayed his friend for political expediency. Spence bailed out on his close friend.

November 7, 2011 (click the link): Dave Spence told KMOX last week that he would not rule out challenging Kinder in a primary, though he walked those sentiments back in a conversation with the Post-Dispatch. "I'm just waiting for the dust to settle on whatever Peter's going to do," Spence said.

The trend of events that led to Mr . Spence's announcement to run for the governor's race in 2012 are disturbing. Republican gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence pumped a cool $2 million into his campaign yesterday.

That is half a million more than Governor Jay Nixon, a Democrat, raised in the third quarter alone and nearly half as much as Nixon has in his entire war chest ($4.2 million at the end of the third quarter). It's also more money than Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, the once presumed front-runner for the GOP nomination who recently announced he would not jump into the race, had on hand at the end of the third quarter.

Many expected that Spence, owner of Alpha Packaging, would help fund his own campaign. This self-donation is a shot of nitrous oxide to the engine. Just like that he is (at least superficially) competitive.

It'll take a lot of money to beat the popular incumbent, whose approval rating hovered above 60 at last measure (which was in the Spring, basically aeons ago by political time).

Amid talk of his past and potential new rivals, Republican gubernatorial candidate David Spence put his money where his mouth is on Wednesday, donating $2 million of his personal wealth into his campaign.


Spence's personal donation, which is not listed as a loan, comes as various better-known Republicans consider whether to challenge him for the nomination in the August 2012 primary. Spence's entry, made official Nov. 23, already forced out Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, a fellow Republican who had been planning for more than two years for challenge the Democratic incumbent, Gov. Jay Nixon.

Spence's donation to himself appears to be the largest individual campaign donation in Missouri history.


Spence also collected this week $100,000 from developer William Koman and $25,000 from David Creston, executive vice president of Alpha Packaging, the firm that Spence bought in the 1980s. Spence remains involved in the company, although he sold most of the interest in Alpha to a private equity firm in 2010. (Click here for the Beacon's recent indepth interview with Spence.)

Spence (right) is not the only self-funded candidate to be running for major office in Missouri, but his donation is the first large sum to be documented.  Another wealthy businessman, John Brunner, is competing in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate. But under federal campaign-finance rules, Brunner won't have to report any donations — including those from his own pocket — until January 2012.


The Missouri Democratic Party was quick to pounce on Spence's spending. “David Spence should explain to Missourians why he’s giving his political campaign $2 million at the same time his bank refuses to repay its $42 million taxpayer bailout," said party spokeswoman Caitlin Legacki. "Spence was a major stock holder in the bailed-out bank, so Missourians are left wondering whether their taxpayer money is now being spent on Spence's political campaign.”


Spence also has taken some heat from tea party activists who object to his stint a few years ago on the board of Reliance Bank, which accepted $42 million in federal bailout aid in early 2009. (Spence has noted that he wasn't on the bank's 16-member holding company, which actually voted to take the aid, until several months after it was accepted.)


Reliance has since come under fire because it announced last February that it was postponing its first annual repayment of $2.2 million because of continued financial problems. Spence left the board soon afterwards, saying he did so in part out of protest.


In any event, Spence's $2 million cash injection comes as speculation continues to swirl around state Auditor Tom Schweich (near left) and St. Louis lawyer Ed Martin, who currently is running for the 2nd District congressional seat. Sen. Jim Lemke, like other Missouri Republican supporters of Peter Kinder are furious with Dave Spence for having thrown his fraternity brother Kinder under the bus for political expediency! On October 26, 2011 Spence said he would wait for Kinder to make up his mind and even gave him $5,000 contribution. On November 4, 2011, Spence hinted that he would primary Kinder i.e. throw his poor and disgraced friend under the bus. Folks like Sen. Danforth, Lemke, and many more are seething with rage.


Can't wait for the Missouri GOP slugfest! Gov. Nixon is the beneficiary. Peter Kinder dropped out of the governor's race due to the stripper scandal and more! The Brunner-esque rollout of the Dave Spence for Governor campaign continues: "Republican businessman Dave Spence, whose past and personal life will face fresh scrutiny now that he is running for governor, acknowledged this week that he was arrested seven years ago for drunken driving...Senate hopeful John Brunner — who, like Spence, is making his first run for office after a long career in business — had his license suspended after being pulled over for drunken driving in August 2004, a month after Spence's arrest."
