Who is Dave Spence? Draft Ed Martin takes a shot at Spence

"There have been significant developments in just the past week. Among them is the announcement of a “self-funder” named David Spence.
We don’t know much about this 53 year old business man, but do know that he just started voting about 10 years ago. We also know how he’s been contributing money. (See below.) He in 2004 he gave money to Chuck Schumer. And this year he’s given $45k to a pac set up for Mitt Romney.
He has pledged to self-fund as much as $4 million. Ed is probably our only hope to beat this guy or Nixon, but we must rally around him!"

Who is Dave Spence? The ultra-right conservatives take a swipe at Spence

David Catanese of the POLITICO reports on possible Missouri gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence: If Kinder's out, I'm in:

St. Louis packaging executive Dave Spence told POLITICO Monday he will run for Missouri governor in 2012 if Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder passes on a campaign.
“I know Peter Kinder, I consider him to be a friend. But if there's an opportunity, I'd like to be part of the solution," he said in an interview. "If he decides not to run, I'd do it with two feet."

Spence, a 53-year-old executive at Alpha Packaging, met with the Republican Governors Association last week after his name circulated in GOP circles as a possible replacement candidate. It's interesting that Spence is priming his campaign with the old-guard GOP. It's also interesting that Spence gave $1000 to far-left NY Senator Chuck Schumer (D) in 2004.

This is not how you jump start a Republican campaign. Spence leaked his political ambitions not to a media outlet with a right tilt like National Review or the Wall Street Journal, but to the left-leaning Catanese at Politico. He's donated to notorious liberal Senator Chuck Schumer. And he's seeking the help of establishment Republicans.

Dave--Mr. Spence, if you prefer--you've obviously had some difficulty getting the helium into your trial balloon, so let me offer a suggestion. Elections are won and lost at the ballot box. That means that you have to appeal to the average, grassroots voter. There are basically two hordes of average, grassroots voters: Tea Partiers or Occupants (as in Occupy Wall Street). You need a strategy to reach out to one of those groups. I suspect that you're not in what the Occupants call the 99%, so you've got to target your message for Tea Partiers.

Now, I've noticed that you've got a nice home in a good neighborhood with great yard (h/t: MOScout). That 7,700 sq. ft. golf green is pretty sweet. You should have the St. Louis Tea Party over! You'd get to know the conservative grassroots, maybe recruit some campaign volunteers, and we'd learn more about your policy preferences. We could have a cookout. That sand trap is big enough... we could spit three or four pigs and bar-b-que them in that."  Read more>>

Who is Dave Spence? "Kinder: Spence will have to defend TARP", Politico

It's the cruz of Missouri Democrats opening argument against packaging executive Dave Spence: He benefited from the TARP bailout, an anathema to a broad section of the Republican party.
Now Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, who dropped his own hopes of running for governor Friday and endorsed Spence, says that's an issue his old fraternity brother will need to explain.
"I am not briefed on the details of the TARP [at] the bank board he sat on or . . . under what circumstances they did or didn't pay a dividend. Those details are something in his business background that he's got to defend," Kinder said on Dana Loesch's radio program. Courtesy of Politico

Who is Dave Spence? He is a Bible-Thumping Conservative Hypocrite

Republican leaders hope packaging tycoon Dave Spence can be a more attractive Missouri governor's candidate in 2012 than the scandal-ridden Lt. Governor Peter Kinder. However, Mr. Spence has never held elective office.

"Spence also has served on the board of directors for Reliance Bancshares Inc., a bank holding company headquartered in St. Louis. Spence said he resigned from the board effective in March. In February, the company announced it would stop making the $2.2 million annual dividend it was supposed to pay to the U.S. Treasury on the $42 million it received under the Troubled Asset Relief Program. Spence said he doesn't recall any details about that decision, but he said the federal bank bailout program helped avoid a potential economic disaster by providing banks with "extra cushion of capital." Politico: "
In addition to his work at Alpha Packaging, Spence served for six years on the board of Reliance Bank. In early 2009, the bank received a $40 million bailout through the Troubled Assets Relief Program, but continued to pay big salaries to its CEO. In April of 2009, Spence was renominated to the board, even after the board accepted TARP funds.
In early 2011, Reliance suspended payments on TARP, and a month later, Spence resigned from the bank’s board. The resignations, according to paperwork filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission in March, were reported as “not related” to the company’s operations.
But on Tuesday, Spence said, “I resigned from the bank board over this issue.”
Spence defended the bailout as a “temporary fix,” but said it was not a permanent solution.
“The banking industry has been in a crisis mode for a while,” he added." Read more>>

Who is Dave Spence? "Kinder endorses Dave Spence", Politico

In announcing his decision to seek reelection to lieutenant governor, Peter Kinder endorsed businessman -- and fraternity brother -- Dave Spence for Missouri's top job.
"I believe after numerous conversations with Dave Spence that he is the Republican Party’s best chance of defeating Jay Nixon. Dave is a self-made man and proven manager who understands how to create jobs and improve the state’s economy. He is smart, serious and has a vision he’s shared with me to renew Missouri’s greatness. I am proud to call him a friend and will do everything in my power to see that he’s elected governor next year," Kinder said.
Missouri Democratic Party spokeswoman Caitlin Legacki was out with a swift statement saying Gov. Jay Nixon's reelection prospects "have never been stronger."
She also laced into Spence for his decision to accept TARP funds, a line of attack that will surely become more prevalent now that Kinder is out of the race.
"It’s hard to imagine Republicans uniting around a guy like David Spence, who spent his first three days as a candidate trying to explain his actions overseeing a bank that took a $40 million government bailout and failed to pay the taxpayers back. To make matters worse, Spence was caught lying about why he left the bank and how much he personally profited from the government bailout. The only thing Missouri taxpayers know about David Spence is that he cares more about his own personal profits than respecting their money,” said Legacki.

Kinder Announces Bid for Re-Election as Lieutenant Governor

Cape Girardeau, MO - After keeping his promise to Missourians to travel the state and discuss a potential race for governor, today Peter Kinder announced his plans to run for re-election.

“I have worked hard every day to serve all the people of Missouri as their Lt. Governor. Serving as Lt. Governor is a great honor. I have the experience, track-record and desire to continue working in that capacity every day to achieve needed reforms. Missouri deserves a Lt. Governor committed to reducing government waste, and protecting Missouri taxpayer dollars,” said Kinder.

As Missouri’s Senior Advocate, Kinder’s office has been busy working with providers and senior advocates to clean up Nixon’s mess in the Department of Health and Senior Services where the health of thousands of seniors has been jeopardized by his department’s total failure to timely provide assessments to seniors waiting for approval to receive critical home care services. Kinder feels strongly that Missouri Seniors need an advocate who will fight for them, a role Kinder will continue if re-elected Lt. Governor.

“Everywhere I traveled during my listening tour people expressed their frustration with Missouri’s unemployment rate and the lack of jobs. Missouri ranked 48th in the nation in job creation in 2010 and had the longest monthly decline in employment in the country under Governor Nixon. Nixon’s leadership has been absent in job creation. Nothing would do more to improve Missouri’s job climate and economic growth potential than defeating Nixon next year. Governor Nixon has failed to lead choosing instead to stand on the sidelines while Governor in other states were taking bold actions and moving their states forward,” said Kinder.

“I believe after numerous conversations with Dave Spence that he is the Republican Party’s best chance of defeating Jay Nixon. Dave is a self-made man and proven manager who understands how to create jobs and improve the state’s economy. He is smart, serious and has a vision he’s shared with me to renew Missouri’s greatness. I am proud to call him a friend and will doddition: everything in my power to see that he’s elected governor next year,” continued Kinder.

Kinder plans to continue his statewide listening tour throughout all corners of the state of Missouri in the near future. Courtesy of Politico

Who is Dave Spence? "What's Worse than a Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Who Frequented Strip Clubs? How About One Who Supports TARP?", Riverfront Times

Republican leaders hope personal care packaging mogul Dave Spence can be a more attractive gubernatorial candidate than Lt. Governor Peter Kinder.
Big news yesterday on the Missouri gubernatorial election front. Dave Spence, a businessman from St. Louis, has jumped into the race.
Spence had been thinking about running for a while now. As recently as late October, he told Poltico that he would almost certainly enter the fray if Lt. Governor Peter Kinder, the presumed front-runner for the nomination, decided not to run. Spence planned to delay his decision until Kinder, who has made headlines recently for his strip club visits in the '90s, made an announcement one way or the other. After all, Spence and Kinder go way back. They were Beta Theta Pi frat brothers at Mizzou and remain friends.
But with Kinder is still on the fence, Spence felt he could no longer wait, he told the Associated Press. The first-time political candidate joins even lesser-known Bill Randles, an attorney from Kansas City who most people don't even know is in the race, as the only official candidates in the Republican primary.
Assuming Kinder eventually does throw his name onto the ballot, we may be in store for a savage primary race. The top two candidates will have much ammunition with which to attack each other. What's a bigger issue than a Republican gubernatorial candidate who frequented strip clubs? How about a Republican gubernatorial candidate who supports TARP?
And Spence's campaign soft-spot goes even further than that.

In 2005, Spence was named onto the board of directors of Reliance Bank. In February 2009, after the recession hit, the federal government bailed out the bank with a $42 million loan as part of the Troubled Asset Relief Program. Banks who received the loan are expected to pay back the tax payers with quarterly dividends.
But in February 2011, Reliance Bancshares, Reliance Bank's parent company announced that it would stop making it's $2.2 million payments, citing financial struggles (more than 100 banks nationwide have done the same thing). At the time, its most recent financial statement showed nearly $15 million in losses during the first nine months of 2010. Spence disagreed with the decision to stop payments. He resigned from the board in March.
"I resigned from the bank board over this issue," he told PoliticMo.
But it's his support for the bailout, a keystone issue among Republican voters, that could hurt his campaign for governor. According to an AP article, when asked about Reliance's move to stop the payments, Spence defended TARP:
Spence said he doesn't recall any details about that decision, but he said the federal bank bailout program helped avoid a potential economic disaster by providing banks with "extra cushion of capital."
Missouri Democrats have already called him out on this. In a press release issued on the heels of Spence's announcement, Missouri Democratic Party spokeswoman Caitlin Legacki said, "It's hard to imagine Republican primary voters supporting a guy like Dave Spence, who not only supported the bank bailouts - but even took a $40 million government bailout for his own bank..."
Then again, Mitt Romney, more or less the GOP front-runner for the presidential nomination has also defended TARP. So it may not be a deal breaker in the voting booth. Plus it's always good to see a degree of ideological heterogeneity in a primary race.
Spence made his money in the packaging business. He owns Alpha Packaging, a St. Louis-based company that manufactures plastic bottles for pharmaceutic and personal care products. The company brings in nearly $200 million in annual sales and employs around 800 people. Many expect Spence to help fund his campaign with his own money, which has drawn him comparisons to John Brunner, the St. Louis hand sanitizer mogul who is running for Senate.
A primary battle between Spence and Kinder could be fierce, considering the blemishes in their records and the high-profile nature of the race. Ever since Daily RFT broke the story about Kinder's sketchy relationship with former stripper and Penthouse centerfold Tammy Chapman, Republican shot callers have been worried about Kinder's chances against the popular Democratic incumbent Governor Jay Nixon. Spence is banking on the whispers that party leaders are searching for a Kinder-alternative.
Last week, as rumors about Spence's potential candidacy were heating up, he told the AP, "People need to know that there are alternatives to Peter Kinder. It doesn't make Peter Kinder a bad guy, but I think people need to know that there are alternatives out there."
A month ago, in an interview with Politico's David Catanese, Spence took what seemed like a veiled shot at Kinder's strip-club-related vulnerability: "I realize they will use my success against me and I'm not a perfect person, but I don't have any gaping holes and I've lived a very good Christian life."
And yet, the way Spence describes it, the race will be more friendly competition than bruising slugfest. He has declared nothing less than respect for Kinder and, in the run up to yesterday's announcement, discussed his potential candidacy as if he were concerned about stepping on Kinder's toes. On the same day as the October interview with Catanese, Spence donated $5,500 to Kinder's Political Action Committee, Friends of Peter Kinder.
Outside of his support for TARP, Spence maintains the template Republican party line: he wants to improve the economy by eliminating some-to-many government regulations that affect businesses, and he wants to make Missouri a right-to-work state, where union membership would not be a requirement for employment. It's ironic that Missouri Republican Party is turning to a guy who took the federal TARP bailout money!
