Candidate Hides the ‘Home’ in Home Economics Degree, ABC News

There is no doubt that Dave Spence, who is a Republican candidate for governor in Missouri, has an economics degree, but he neglected to mention it covered the most micro of economies: the home.
The multimillionaire businessman-turned-aspiring-politician left off the “home” part of his degree and touted himself as an economics graduate from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He even purportedly attended the school’s business college, which does not include home economics majors, according to the Associated Press.

“Staff put this together, so it was a staff mistake,” Jared Craighead, Spence’s campaign manager, told ABC News. “It was never an attempt to be less than completely transparent.”

Spence, 53, acknowledged the misstatement earlier this week after the St. Louis Post Dispatch brought it to his attention, but he did not change the biography on his website until Thursday.
It now reads: “After high school, Dave attended the University of Missouri-Columbia where he majored in family economics and management (also known as consumer economics) and earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Home Economics.”

“I was not the greatest student in the world,” Spence told the newspaper. “I’ll make fun of myself: I was a 60-watt bulb in a 100-watt society.”

But it seems Spence didn’t need that business economics degree after all. Four years after graduating, Spence purchased Alpha Packaging, then a small plastics company with $350,000 in annual sales. Twenty-five years later, Spence sold the company for a reported $260 million.

"Last year, Spence's company was purchased by a private equity firm called Irving Place Capital for a reported $260 million.  Irving Place Capital (formerly Bear Stearns Merchant Banking) was previously the private equity arm of the defunct investment bank Bear Stearns, which played a key role in causing the financial crisis and the global recession. After Bear Stearns collapsed and was acquired by JP Morgan (with the help of a$30 billion taxpayer guarantee from the Federal Reserve), Irving Place Capital spun off to become an independent private equity firm in November 2008.   [St. Louis Post Dispatch,9/1/10; Private Equity International, 10/28/08] " Courtesy of Show Me Progress

Our addition:
"... completely forgot about the $40 million bailout that his bank received while he served on the board and has subsequently refused to pay back.  Let's not forget that when pressed on the issue, Spence has repeatedly refused to give a straight answer why his bank hasn't repaid the taxpayer dollars, even after pouring $2 million into his own campaign fund." >>Read more

Dave Spence: Deeply connected to Wall Street.  Can you trust him with Missouri Governor's office? This man who is worth $260,000,000 already spelled out that he will take away the rights of the police and firefighters that protect us, nurses that treat us, teachers that teach our children, sanitation workers that clean our streets etc if elected the next Governor of Missouri. Spence will be brutal, heartless, and callous! He is part of the 1% that controls the American economy at the expense of the 99%.

Dave Spence sold his company, Alpha Packaging, to  Irving Place Capital (formerly Bear Stearns Merchant Banking) for $260,000,000.  Irving Place Capital  was previously the private equity arm of the defunct investment bank Bear Stearns, which played a key role in causing the financial crisis and the global recession. Dave Spence continued to be the CEO of Alpha Packaging after Irving Place Capital acquired bought it. Spence is a Wall Street insider! Can you trust him with the Missouri Governor's in 2012.
Dave Spence smiling all the way to Reliance bank after he sold  his company to Irving Place Capital for $260,000,000. In September 2010, Spence bought 500,000 Shares of Reliance Stock [US Fed News, 9/25/10]. What a sweet deal! Spence owes Missouri voters an explanation! Spence is tainted! He needs to come clean!

This is how $260,000,000 looks like in a bank vault. Spence sold his company for $260 million.  Spence, a very wealthy man, wants Missouri voters to elect him Governor in 2012 so that he can take away the rights of police, firefighters, nurses, teachers etc. It's no wonder that he donated $2,000,000 of his money to the Governor's race in 2012. We believe Spence and his wealthy friends want to buy into the Governor's office.

Dave Spence's $8,000,000 mansion in suburban St. Louis.  The man who is worth $260,000,000 and lives in such a luxurious lifestyle has vowed to do what Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Gov. John Kasich of Ohio did---devastate the middle class by taking away the rights of the police, firefighters, nurses, teachers, sanitation workers, paramedics etc. We believe Spence will be brutal, heartless, and callous! You lost your job, home, health care, retirement etc or squeaking by! Is Spence the man you want in the Governor's mansion during this economic crisis? We suggest you suck his cash and send him packing! Send him back to his luxurious mansion and Wall Street friends.

Dave Spence says to Missouri voters: Don't Worry Be Happy! I am worth
$260,000,000! I live in a $8,000,000 mansion in St. Louis suburbs! I will
devastate the Missouri middle class by taking away the rights of police,

What’s David Hiding? Spence Scrubs “Controversial” Policy Statement from Website

Jefferson City, Mo.— Since announcing his candidacy for Governor, David Spence has only released one statement to the public, but when that statement was posted to Spence’s official website and Facebook page, the only line containing references to his policy positions was mysteriously gone —positions Spence himself described as “controversial.”
Today, the Missouri Democratic Party asks Spence to explain why he scrubbed the statements and to clarify his controversial policy proposals.
“By David Spence’s own admission, his positions are controversial.  But instead of explaining what’s so controversial about his beliefs, so mainstream Missourians can make their own determinations, this guy would rather just say ‘oops’ and pretend he never said it.  Between David Spence’s refusal to explain why his bank won’t pay back its $42 million bailout and hiding his controversial beliefs from voters, Missourians are left with more questions than answers,” said Caitlin Legacki, Missouri Democratic Party spokeswoman.
In an email distributed Monday, Spence said, “My ideas to enact right-to-work, tort-reform and tax reform are going to be controversial but they are badly needed reforms which will make Missouri more competitive and put Missouri on the path to prosperity and job growth."

But when visitors to www.SpenceforGovernor.com click on Spence’s “Announcement” button, they are taken to a page that contains the very same email announcement, except the line above about Spence’s controversial policy positions.
The Missouri Democratic Party calls on Spence to explain why he deleted the section from his website and to come clean with voters about his controversial beliefs.

Dave Spence, Missouri Gubernatorial Candidate, Changes College Biography. The Huffington Post

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Missouri gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence changed his online biography Thursday to fix a claim about a college economics degree and acknowledged that his campaign also had distributed fliers wrongly asserting that he attended business school at the University of Missouri.

The biographical adjustments come as Spence – a St. Louis businessman making his first political campaign – has been traveling the state trying to ramp up his challenge to Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon in 2012 elections. Spence's campaign has emphasized his business acumen.

Spence, 53, has a degree in home economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia. But the biography on his campaign website originally omitted the word "home" while describing his economics degree – a fact first reported earlier this week by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Spence acknowledged that the description may have been misleading.

On Thursday, Spence's website was changed to remove any reference to a degree, stating merely that he attended the University of Missouri-Columbia. Later Thursday, the website was changed again to provide a more elaborate description of his college experience.

His website biography now states: "After high school, Dave attended the University of Missouri-Columbia where he majored in family economics and management (also known as consumer economics) and earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Home Economics."

It wasn't the first time that Spence's biography had to be changed.

The Associated Press obtained a copy Thursday of a Spence campaign flier that had been distributed at a Republican Party event that Spence attended Dec. 6 in the St. Louis area. The flier claimed: "After high school, Dave attended University of Missouri-Columbia School of Business and earned a degree in Economics."

But Spence never attended the university's business school. His degree in home economics was awarded through a different school at the university.

Spence said in emails Thursday to the AP that he didn't know his campaign materials had included the business school claim.

"I have said all along that I will not or do not lie," Spence said. "A lot of this is overblown, as I was not aware of any place that said business school."

Spence later added: "I will take responsibility for this. I did not catch the mistake on early campaign literature."

Spence campaign manager Jared Craighead said the statement about the business school was a "staff oversight that was corrected." The flier distributed in December also listed the wrong dates for when Spence had received awards from the Missouri Chamber of Commerce.

The Missouri Democratic Party said Thursday that Spence's education assertions are more than mere oversights.

"If David Spence can't tell the truth about something as basic as his college degree, Missourians shouldn't believe a word that comes out of his mouth. This guy is just shameless," said state Democratic Party spokeswoman Caitlin Legacki.  Courtesy of The Huffington Post.

Muddle: Dave Spence admitted that he had misled voters in Missouri - and had not really attended the state's business school.

Rival: Democratic Governor Jay Nixon

A businessman making his debut political campaign has been forced to make an embarrassing retreat over his academic credentials.

Dave Spence, a gubernatorial candidate for Missouri, was forced to change his online biography after it wrongly said that he attended business school and held an economics degree - when in fact it was a diploma in home economics.

Spence, 53, has been focusing on his business acumen in his campaign for governor in the 2012 elections.

He also acknowledged that his campaign had  distributed fliers wrongly asserting that he was a student at the University of Missouri business school.

Nick Reed on Dave Spence: "When You're Laughed At, That's Pretty Bad" Nick Reed on Dave Spence: "When You're Laughed At, That's Pretty Bad"

Bill Randles, Dave Spence's rival in the GOP primary for governor, was on KSGF's Nick Reed show this Thursday.  During Randles' interview, the conversation turned to Spence's problems with the truth.

"This is not a good first introduction," Reed said. "I mean yesterday I was saying it's ok to be hated.  But when you're laughed at, that's pretty bad. I mean in terms of your viability with people."

Here's a partial transcript:
REED: So you've got this opponent, Dave Spence, he's from the St. Louis area, and he's kind of been joked about the last few days I guess is the way to put it. He has on- he's a business guy and one of the things that- and I don't know him but he's had on his website is that he majored in economics. Is that what it was? And then someone found out, well home economics, which they're saying "well, it's something else really." Home economics make it sound like it’s not as important as it is and its not- it's still up on the website, I think as of this morning, or last night it was. What do you- do you know Dave Spence personally, I don't know him.
RANDLES: I have visited a few times with him on the phone, but apart from that I don't know him.
REED: So how did you find out about- I mean this is one of those things, I don't think to most people its major, but I think it's- the first introduction a lot of Missourians are going to have to this guy is this. And this is not a good first introduction. I mean yesterday I was saying it's ok to be hated, but when you're laughed at, that's pretty bad. I mean in terms of your viability with people.
RANDLES: You know, he's been a successful businessman. Perhaps he should stick with that. The fact is, it makes you wonder why he would state that his degree was in something other than it was. The public is so used to politicians budging the truth or trying to put one over on them. You've got to be extra candid I think... Full audio here. Courtesy of Fire Up! Missouri.

Our Opinion: Troubling campaign oversight, News Tribune

"Oversights on campaign resumes rarely yield understatements.
Dave Spence, a Republican candidate for governor, did not receive a degree in economics from the University of Missouri School of Business, despite a previous posting on his website and a flier distributed in December.
The flier, obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, reads: “After high school, Dave attended University of Missouri-Columbia School of Business and earned a degree in Economics.”
The information is only partially accurate, which is a polite way of saying it is false.
Spence earned a bachelor of science degree in home economics from the Columbia campus, but not its business school.
Spence told The Associated Press: “I have said all along that I will not or do not lie.” He later added: “I will take responsibility for this. I did not catch the mistake on early campaign literature.”
Campaign personnel now have fallen on the sword of criticism; campaign manager Jared Craighead characterized the reference to the business school as a “staff oversight that was corrected.”
Spence, a political novice, is touting his business experience in his effort to unseat incumbent Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.
Did someone in the Spence camp inadvertently omit the word home from home economics?
Or, is it more likely the association with domestic and household responsibilities didn’t fit comfortably with the business-leader image the campaign is attempting to convey?
Ultimately, we must ask why this error occurred.
If it was an oversight, voter confidence in accuracy and attention to detail has been rattled.
If it was deliberate, voters deserve to be troubled by a disingenuous portrayal. They also have ample reason to be offended if someone attempted to put one over on them.
In this day and age, fact checking is comprehensive and thorough in political races — particularly at the level of our state’s chief executive.
An error of this magnitude is inexcusable." Courtesy of News Tribune, Missouri's Capital City News

Short Take: Dave Spence finds it's a bit hot in the kitchen, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

There might be no job in politics more suited for a home economics major than Missouri governor. The Capitol needs a serious house-cleaning, and that's just for starters.
Have you seen the amount of food dished out daily in that place? Who bakes all that stuff? Who decides between Sterno or candles, paper plates or plastic? And how do you get the creases that straight when folding napkins?
We don't understand why Republican gubernatorial candidate Dave Spence, a successful St. Louis businessman, would mislead the public about the true nature of his college degree, as the Post-Dispatch's Jake Wagman reported this week. Mr. Spence has been boasting of a degree in economics. Yes, but it's home economics from what Mizzou now grandly calls its College of Human Environmental Sciences.

Home ec these days is not just cupcakes and starched aprons, if it ever was. It's human and child development, nutrition, personal finance, textile management. Whatever Mr. Spence learned there he put to good use in building a plastic bottle company that made him a fortune.
Our advice: Embrace home ec. Tell the voters you not only can bring home the bacon, but fry it nice and crisp and serve it on Limoges china. Courtesy of St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Mo. Republican gubernatorial candidate Spence changes claims about college economics degree, Washington Post
